Remembering through Visuals, Sound, & Movement
Healing Spaces: Remembering through Visuals, Sound, and Movement is an exhibition featuring the visual artwork of Alexandria Robinson, an interactive installation by Omar Williams, a spoken word segment by poets from Miscellaneous Poetry Tour, a musical performance by Alleon Rose and a performance by the African drum circle Ubuntu Bahamas. Healing Spaces transforms The Gallery and Wine Bar into a sanctuary for healing and recollection, allowing diverse artistic expressions to intertwine to host an atmosphere of witnessing and recovery.
The exhibition centers on the multidisciplinary practice of Bahamian artist Alexandria Robinson. Robinson’s work explores themes of trauma—both personal and environmental—identity and spirituality while utilizing oil painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Through her work, she incorporates elements of her childhood and familial narratives, while also addressing the impact of industrialization on our landscapes. Contrasting materials like steel with imagery of plant life, Robinson positions her audience to consider the tender balance of loss, reclamation, agency and perseverance.
A veteran florist and installation artist, Omar Williams of Wild Seed Designs activates the gallery space with a dynamic arrangement of local plants to further emphasize our connection to the environment. He invites viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between industrial progress and preservation. Lending voice to the visual, poets will wield the spoken word to explore individual and collective traumas to facilitate release and communal healing. Furthering this, the songbird Alleon Rose will serenade the audience with an original song charting her pathway back to God, her Creator.
The performance by Ubuntu Bahamas, embodying the philosophy ‘I am what I am, because of who we all are,’ underscores the therapeutic power of communal drumming, connecting participants to a rich history often suppressed by colonialism. Through this multifaceted exploration of sound, visuals, and movement, Healing Spaces invites audiences to engage in soul retrieval, reconnecting fragmented parts of themselves and fostering a collective sense of restoration. Laced with African and indigenous symbolism, the cumulative work in Healing Spaces: Remembering through Visuals, Sound, and Movement invites the audience into a catalyst for mending, reclaiming lost histories and nurturing new connections within themselves and their communities.
