Surface Tension: "The property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force, due to the cohesive nature of its molecules."
In “Surface Tension & Flow”, we acknowledge that, as an archipelagic nation, the very substance that separates us, unites us: water. This exhibit’s intention is to expand on this duality by exploring the beauty and complexity of our archipelagic nation.
Once referred to as "The Out Islands," the links in our chain beyond New Providence have since been rebranded as "Family Islands"—a term that speaks to unity, but also hints at the underlying tensions and rivalries that may exist in any family dynamic.
What effect does this physical separation of islands have on the feeling of unity or disunity in our national psyche? Does it affect the sense of cohesion we feel during times of crisis? Does it steer social policies, priorities, and resources? What might our nation look like if we saw the surrounding waters as metaphorical bridges and thoroughfares to change, rather than moats of separation?
In tandem with these thought-provoking questions, this exhibit seeks to explore the interplay between the forces of tension and flow by examining how both states shape our experiences and our art. Tension involves an awareness of a desire to maintain or achieve a particular state of being, while flow implies a willingness to set aside preconceived notions. Flow allows our intuition to guide us as we remain open to accepting unknown outcomes. How do you see these ideas represented through art making?
Connecting the Islands
The exhibit aims to foster a sense of interconnectedness across all Bahamian islands. We call on artists from every island to contribute their unique perspectives and voices. Despite our physical separations, we share a common desire to create and bridge gaps through art. To uncover the hidden strengths in the very things that seem to separate us.
By bringing together diverse works from across the Bahamas, "Surface Tension & Flow” hopes to serve as a conduit for unity and community building by bridging the gaps within our archipelago.
